Christ Leads; Not Me
Dr. Tony Evans, Praying and Waiting on God's Timing
"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord."
Colossians 3:16 King James Version (KJV)
Last month we dealt with accepting Christ verses surrendering to Christ. Okay you've done that whats next? The battle over our temptations. I think that the biggest problem we have to deal with in the world is temptation. From all the way back to the garden with Adam and Eve we each fall prey to it .
The bible says let no one say when they are tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each of us is tempted when we are drawn away by our own desires and are persuaded. - James 1:13, 14
So what do we do? How do we overcome our temptations? In one of the daily devotionals, which I endeavor to read daily, are some very practical and simple steps that will help us to learn to overcome temptations, but I warn you it is not easy. Why, because one must become a constant vigilant?
In Matthew 26 after Jesus celebrates the Passover with his disciples and Jesus tells Peter that he would deny his Lord, "Peter boasted that others may but not me." He would not! Yet within a few hours Peter went Mission Impossible on Jesus and he was swearing and disavowing any knowledge! Do not be hard on him; it could happen to anyone of us. Remember, we all have areas of vulnerability which, if not disciplined by our character and a commitment, have the potential to defeat or as I have once learned, destroy us! Ah, but God he has put in place what we can do.
1: Recognize it for what it is. Before we yield to temptation we usually go through certain stages. When you become aware, pray and read your Bible; neglecting to incorporate these two habits into your life will make you indifferent to God, insensitive to the danger and drawn like a month to a flame. You begin to rationalize, think no one will know, what harm will a look, a touch, a taste do?
2: Reach for help. AA, NA, Gamblers Anonymous, Weight Watchers; all have accountably partners why not us? What’s the secret to victory? Lean less on ourselves and more on God and his word. Almost every gym or health agency has support groups. The temptations that they deal with can keep one alive longer and give a better quality of life here on Earth, we’re talking about living our external lives in His presence.
Okay we’ve got the steps but, what’s the plan victory?
1: No matter how often you fall, get back up! Remember, you’ve just realized that your wondering eyes are no longer looking at the beauty but, are longing in the lust. Hey come on! You have been doing this for years saying to yourself that it’s just a complementary glance; and you women do it too! Do play! The point is don’t get discouraged. Like I said, it’s simple, not easy.
2: Don’t deny it, deal with it! Even Job had to make a covenant with his eyes not to look upon the young maidens, see Job:31. “Depart from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it” – Psalm 34:14 (See I told you it was simple) “The Lord is always near to those who have a broken heart, He saves such as have a contrite spirit (showing sincere remorse). – Psalm 34:14-18
Study Romans chapter 12 but, memorize verse 2 as soon as possible: “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” … for your life.
See like Jesus told Simon Peter: “Satan has desired to have you…but I have prayed for you, that your faith fail you not: and when you are converted (returned), that you strengthen your brethren; (brothers or sisters in Christ). – Luke 22:31, 32.
Let today mark a new beginning by using what you have learned not only to keep getting up and to learn to avoid falling again into the same temptation, but to help others in facing their temptation.
Believe you can walk in victory, because with Christ you can! Jesus said, “I have given you the power to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing can [permanently] harm you… - Luke 10:19. Get rid of your “I can’t attitude, and draw today and every day on God’s strength! If you will do that, He will do everything else.
